Emily and I have this running joke...
There are three genres of independent films that always make money: horror, Christian, and LGBT. The joke is that some day we're going to make the world's first gay-Christian-horror film.
When we were writing CINEMA PURGATORIO we needed a scene for my character, Neil...a scene that would compel him to enter the 48-hour film festival in Charleston and try to meet Bill Murray. So we invented these two shady brothers, Marty and Mikey Rutt...low-budget horror film producers who want Neil to assistant direct their new film, DEFILING THE ODDS.
I'd worked with Blaque Fowler (white beard) many years ago on another film and had recently reconnected with him on Facebook. I asked if he'd be willing to come to Greenville and play with us for a few hours, and generously obliged. (That shirt he's wearing? It's vintage...from Blaque's own closet.)
Brad Garrett (aka Brade McGovern) and I met just a couple of days before this scene was shot. Brad is a terrific improvisational comedian...and obviously very trusting of strangers. He joined us at the Hawaiian shaved ice stand on Wade Hampton Boulevard in Taylors and did a fantastic job.
Edited, this scene runs about two minutes and has a couple of reverse shots of me looking suitably incredulous. But I've posted it raw and (mostly) uncut because Brad and Blaque gave us so much more funny than that...it seemed a shame to let it go to waste.
